Over 4 days and 3 nights, you’ll ride a gentle camel across the giant dunes of Erg Chebbi, sleep under a sky full of stars at a luxury desert camp, and spend a whole day exploring the Merzouga desert. One of the trip’s most special moments is a visit to a nomadic family, where you’ll see their traditional way of life up close in a genuine cultural exchange. With a full day set aside in the desert, you’ll have plenty of time to take in the landscapes, connect with local nomadic people, and discover the heart of the Sahara at an unhurried pace. Tour Highlights:
Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah → Ouarzazate → Dades Gorges
Your desert adventure begins with a pick-up from your hotel, riad or any other spot in Marrakech. We leave the city and head southeast into the High Atlas Mountains, passing charming Berber villages and stopping at the best viewpoints for photos. At Ait Ben Haddou, you’ll have lunch and explore the ancient kasbah, a fortified village listed by UNESCO since 1987. It has starred in famous films such as Prince of Persia and Gladiator, as well as the hit series Game of Thrones. A short drive brings us to Ouarzazate, where we can stop at Africa’s largest film studio if you’d like to visit. We then continue to the Dades Gorges through the pretty Valley of Roses. In the Dades Valley, you’ll see the remarkable rock formations known as “monkey fingers” and enjoy a sweeping view of the gorge and valley before checking into your hotel for the night.
Day 2: Dades Gorges → Todra Canyon → Merzouga Desert
After a good breakfast, we set off on a scenic drive along the Dades and Todra Rivers, lined with green palm groves and traditional Berber villages. Our first stop is the Todra Gorge near Tinghir, one of the most spectacular canyons in the world. From there, we continue toward the Merzouga desert. On the way to the Erg Chebbi dunes, your driver/guide may suggest a stop at a traditional Berber shop, where you can try on Berber clothing and take photos for free. You’re welcome to buy a desert scarf or a souvenir, but there’s no obligation at all; the visit is mainly a way to share Berber culture. If you’d prefer to skip it, just let your guide know and we’ll carry on. On arrival in Merzouga, you’ll set off on a camel trek into the heart of the dunes. As the sun sets behind the sand, enjoy the view and try your hand at sandboarding. Your night is spent at a luxury desert camp with a delicious dinner and the timeless magic of the Sahara after dark.
Day 3: Explore the Merzouga Desert
Get up early to watch a stunning sunrise from a dune near your camp. After breakfast at camp, your full day of desert exploration begins. Traveling by 4×4, we head out to meet a Berber nomadic family living beyond the dunes, who will welcome you and share how they live and the traditions of their culture. We’ll also visit the small hidden village of Mefis, listen to Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, and see the Lake of Birds when it holds water. After lunch, we take you to your riad to check in and enjoy some free time. You can go for a swim or take a walk to the nearby dunes before dinner and an overnight stay at the riad. If you’d rather spend a second night at the desert camp, that’s also an option.
Day 4: Merzouga Desert → Agdez → Marrakech
After breakfast at your riad, we begin the journey back to Marrakech. This time the route follows the Draa Valley, the longest valley in Morocco, with a stop in Agdez for a panoramic view over its endless palm groves. We’ll break for lunch in Ouarzazate before crossing the High Atlas Mountains once more on the way to Marrakech. Your 4 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga ends with a drop-off at your accommodation.
