Tour Highlights:
Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley
Your tour begins with an easy pick-up from your accommodation in Marrakech. Leaving the city behind, we cross the impressive High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi-n-Tichka Pass. Your driver/guide will stop at the most beautiful viewpoints, and you’re always welcome to ask for extra stops. After lunch in Ait Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate, we continue toward the Dades Gorge through the oasis of Skoura and the Rose Valley. In Skoura’s green palm grove, you can choose to visit Amridil Kasbah, an outstanding fortified village. If you’re traveling in spring, we’ll also stop to see the valley covered in blooming roses. At the Dades Gorge, you’ll see the striking rock formations known as “monkey fingers” and enjoy a panoramic view over the gorge before heading to your hotel for a relaxing evening, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga
After breakfast at your hotel in the Dades Valley, we drive to Tinghir, home to a beautiful oasis and historic kasbahs where Berber and Jewish communities once lived side by side. You’ll then walk beneath the 300-meter cliffs of the Todra Gorge before we continue toward the Sahara. We stop for lunch along the way, and on arrival in Merzouga your camel guide and camels will be waiting to take you across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi to your desert camp. On the way, you’ll pause on a high dune to watch a magnificent sunset and try sandboarding. In the evening, the camp team serves a delicious dinner, followed by Berber drumming around the campfire under a sky full of stars.
Day 3: Full Day Exploring the Desert
Set your alarm early to watch a quiet sunrise from your camp. After breakfast, we pick you up by 4×4 for a full day of desert exploration. First, we drive to an area where nomads have settled, and a family will welcome you into their tent for tea, a wonderful chance to learn how they live in such a harsh, remote environment. Next, we visit a hidden abandoned village in the middle of the desert, once home to galena mines, which you’ll also get to see. We then continue to the village of Khamlia to listen to Gnawa music performed by local musicians, whose roots trace back to sub-Saharan Africa, and you can have lunch at a local restaurant here. After lunch, we visit a lake near Merzouga when it holds water before taking you to your riad for the night.
Day 4: Merzouga → Rissani → Agdez → Ouarzazate
Wake up early to enjoy another peaceful sunrise from your riad’s terrace before we set off. Our first stop is the old city of Rissani, where we’ll explore a traditional souk. We then travel to Ouarzazate through the beautiful Draa Valley, stopping in Agdez to take in its sweeping valley views. We arrive at your riad in Ouarzazate in the afternoon.
Day 5: Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah → Telouet Kasbah → Marrakech
Your last morning begins with breakfast at your riad. Known as the gateway to the Sahara and the “Hollywood of Africa,” Ouarzazate is home to the historic Taourirt Kasbah and Atlas Studios, which made the city a famous filming destination. After exploring Ouarzazate, we continue to Ait Ben Haddou to discover its ancient kasbah, an important historic site protected by UNESCO since 1987. This impressive fortress has appeared in many famous films and series, including Gladiator, The Mummy and Game of Thrones. From Ait Ben Haddou, we head back across the High Atlas Mountains toward Marrakech, stopping along the way to admire the Telouet Kasbah. Your 5 days private desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and back ends with a drop-off at your accommodation in Marrakech.
